Winter Wedding Planning: What Brides Worry About (and How We Plan for It)

Winter weddings are so pretty!

Winter wedding planning often comes with a different set of concerns than spring or summer weddings, especially when it comes to weather, timelines, lighting, and comfort

Our winter brides worry about things like outdoor photos, weather, timelines, and comfort. It's less about trends and more about what could go wrong.

While we have fewer weddings in the winter months, we still have years of experience working them. These are the most common concerns we hear and how we head them off.

WEATHER DELAYS

What if a whole blizzard or ice storm rolls through the night before or day of my wedding? What if my vendors can't get to me?

Snow and ice can absolutely change how a wedding day flows. Experienced vendors plan ahead, build buffers into the timeline, and coordinate closely with planners and photographers so the weather doesn’t create chaos.

We also keep a close eye on the forecast leading up to your wedding so we can be as prepared as possible. We're going to get to you ... we might be white-knuckling it on the freeway at 20 miles per hour, buttcheeks clenched, crying on the inside ... but we ARE coming.

AM I GOING TO HAVE ENOUGH DAYLIGHT FOR PHOTOS?

Am I going to have any natural light photos by the time the ceremony happens?

It’s easy to forget that it can be dark by 5pm in the winter months. With a quick look at sunset times, your planner and photographer can build a timeline that maximizes daylight.

Maybe your ceremony is at 4pm and it’s already heading toward dusk? No problem. We can often get couple’s portraits, bridal portraits, and family photos done (or mostly done) before the ceremony. A first look can help tremendously, but if that’s not your thing, flash is very much our friend!

At your Bridal Preview, we may also talk about how photos taken outdoors against a bright white landscape can affect how makeup reads on camera. We’ll look at your photographer’s editing style and make recommendations so you don’t end up looking washed out. 🙂

WILL MY HAIR AND MAKEUP GET WIERD IN THE COLD?

What if it’s snowing? What if my nose turns red? What if my hair gets damp?

The honest answer is: it depends on your decisions.

We prep hair and skin differently for winter events, but there isn’t a magic solution that keeps your nose from turning red if you’re wiping snot away, or your hair from reacting if it gets wet. If you’re wearing your hair down or half-up and spending a lot of time outdoors, touch-ups are just part of the reality.

If you don’t want to book a Retain Service for ongoing touch-ups, we’ll guide you toward styles and makeup choices that hold up better in winter conditions.

HOW DO I STAY WARM WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE THAT KID IN A CHRISTMAS STORY?

Do I wear a coat ... or just risk hypothermia?

Two solid strategies:

1. Plan outerwear that actually belongs with the dress — faux fur stoles, capes, or structured coats photograph beautifully.

2. Wear whatever keeps you warm, penguin-walk your way outside (highly recommend for icy surfaces), take your warm layers off for a handful of photos, then head back inside to warm up and repeat.

Winter photos are often done in short bursts outdoors, with warm-up breaks in between.

And shoes? If your dress covers your feet, there’s no reason to risk falling in heels. Throw on socks and boots so at least your little tater tots stay warm.

DID WE CHOOSE THE WRONG SEASON?

Listen ... I don't know these people or this photographper but I'm going to need you (yes, you, Reader) to do this shot for your winter wedding because it's so freaking cute!

Never fear! Yes, summer weddings are gorgeous with flowers in full bloom, greenery everywhere, sunlight basting everything in a golden glow. But winter weddings? Also stunning. Soft, bright light that makes skin tones look creamy. Venues dripping in twinkle lights. TINY FREAKING SNOW FLAKES floating around you like a rom-com moment.

What matters most isn’t the season — it’s whether your vendor team understands the season. When everyone plans for winter instead of fighting it, the day feels calm, cozy, and intentional.

Winter weddings reward preparation. When your hair, makeup, and photography teams understand cold-weather timelines, lighting, and comfort, winter becomes an advantage, not a risk.
